Indians have first-place wrestler in Mathews Invitational Wrestling Tournament

Participating in last Saturday’s Mathews Invitational Wrestling Tournament, the Northumberland Indians placed eighth in the 13-team field.
Richmond’s L.C. Bird High School edged out host Mathews for the team title. The Indians were coached by a brother-sister duo of Stephen Scripture and Janet Harrison. Steve Hanks also assisted.
Despite the poor team showing, the Indians had one first place as Aaron Curry took the 145-pound title with three wins, two coming by pins. Northumberland also recorded two second places, one third and one fourth place in individual placements.
Seconds went to Clinton Carter in the 195-pound class with a 2-1 record that included two pins.
Because this one was an individual tourney, the teams could enter more than one individual in a weight class.
