United in matrimony for 76 years
Married couple William A. Hudnall and Bessie Basey Hudnall celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary on January 15, 2014.
January 15, 2014 marked 76 years since the day when William “Bill” A. Hudnall and Bessie Basey of Cooper’s Landing first said their
I do’s” to one another and became Mr. and Mrs. William A. Hudnall.
Both grew up in Northumberland County and lived across the road from each other at Hack’s Neck. But neither one really paid the other any attention until Bessie was in Rosenwald High School and Bill left Northumberland to work on a fish boat in Cape May, New Jersey. He had sent Bessie’s sister a card because his brother, James, knew her sister.
When Bill returned home, 17-year-old Bessie wanted to know why he hadn’t sent her a card and told him she was jealous. He replied, “If I had known you, I would have sent you a card, too.”
“That’s how it all started,” Bessie said.
That was all it took to begin a romance that led to their wedding in Baltimore when she was 18 and he was 23.
They lived in Baltimore where Bill worked in a grocery store and Bessie worked in a variety of other stores. Later, during World War II, she assembled left wings for airplanes.
In 1945, they moved to Brooklyn and Bill opened his own grocery store.
