There will be no emergency situations for local volunteer firefighters and emergency workers as far as healthcare requirements are concerned.
On Friday, U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va) announced that volunteer emergency service workers will not be required to be counted as full-time equivalent employees for purposes of healthcare coverage per the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as “Obamacare.”
Chris Neale, president of Callao Volunteer Fire Department, said his organization could have been affected as they consist of approximately 50 members.
“Our members do what they do out of their love for their community. They do it selflessly and do not expect anything in return,” said Neale. “It could have forced departments [with 50 or more members] to provide health insurance or pay a hefty penalty for not doing so.”
