Extreme cold the cause of power outage in Northumberland communities last week
Several residents throughout the county were shocked when their homes suddenly went dark due to a power outage last Thursday.
The NNEC reported that approximately 1,823 members were without power early on the morning on Jan. 30.
Affected areas included Edwardsville, Ophelia, Lara, Avalon, Rainswood and Sampsons Wharf.
According to Public Relations Manager Andrew Packett, linemen restored power to all members by 1:30 p.m. that day.
Packett said on the NNEC website that the outages were due to load issues caused by extremely cold weather in the area.
Local reports of the temperature that morning varied from 0 to -2 degrees Fahrenheit.
“We haven’t seen the river with this much ice in a very long time,” Packett said in a follow-up interview on Friday.
