Northumberland Wrestlers advance to State Finals

With the cancellation of the Conference 43 tournament because of snow, the Northumberland Indians wrestling team was able to automatically advance to the Region 1A East Tournament, which was also postponed by a day due to wintry weather. As a result, the finals were held last Sunday in a rare occurrence in Virginia High School sports. The Northumberland Indians, with only one senior and giving up three weight classes, finishes sixth in the 12-team field, but excelled in individual categories. Kevin Hanks took the individual championship in the 145-pound class with a perfect 4-0 record. Hanks, tied 5-5 in the finals of his match, had gone into overtime with a one-minute OT period. He settled the matter with a take-down and three back points for the win ad the title.
The Indians also recorded a second, two thirds and three fifths among their 11 participants in the tournament. Individually by eight class, their records and placements were as follows: at 106 pounds, Drew Saville, 0-2, injured in hi first match; at 126, Billy Pipkin, 3-1 in third place; 132-Tyler Costley, 2-2 in fifth place; 138-Hanks, 4-0 with a first place finish; at 145, Aaron Curry 3-2 in fifth place; 152-Lazreth Tschantre, 2-2; 160-Noah Kramer, 3-2 in fifth place; in the 170-pound class, Austin Kent, 2-1 for a second-place finish; 182-Philip Harrison, 4-1 with a
