Lady Indians advance to regionals
The 2014 Northumberland girls varsity basketball team
The Northumberland girls’ varsity basketball team came out the gate strong with two victories to open the Conference 43 tournament, but lost in the finals to Colonial Beach.
On Tuesday at Northumberland High School, the Lady Indians dominated Washington and Lee 67-28. On Wednesday at Lancaster, they turned back Rappahannock 55-36, but a subpar performance against the Lady Drifters left them on the short end of a 45-30 score.
As the second seed in the conference, they hosted a first-round game on Tuesday and drew the sixth-seeded Washington and Lee team. After a slow opening, the Lady Indians began to press, and the results were several Lady Eagle turnovers and a Northumberland run on the scoreboard. It was Tylisha Crocket from the outside and Justice Gordon underneath in a 19-6 first quarter lead. It didn’t get any better for the Lady Eagles as they scored just three second-quarter points and found themselves down 39-9 at halftime.
Gordon was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points. She also added nine rebounds.
