Lady Indians end season in opening round of regionals
The Northumberland girls varsity basketball team made the long journey Tuesday to face the Altavista Lady Colonels.
They left empty-handed as they lost to Altavista, 43-38 to close what was a strong overall performance in the 2013-2014 basketball season. They were two games shy of returning to state-level competition.
The game opened with the Colonels getting the ball inside to their tall, six-foot-one center Sydney Morris. Northumberland countered with a red-hot shooting Rajaa Shabazz and Tylisha Crockett.
The Lady Indians held a very brief 6-4 lead in the opening quarter, and from that point on, it was a race between the two teams.
But of the 40 total fouls in the game, 32 went against Northumberland. Tylisha Crockett led the Indians in scoring with 18 points, including three of her patented three-pointers. Rajaa Shabazz scored 16, Justice gordon nine and Katie Crowther one. Altavista was led by Sydney Morris with 18 points and Kalia Donigan with 16. The two combined to sink 16 of 27 foul shots.
For her stellar play all season, Rajaa Shabazz was selected as team All-Conference #43 as a sophomore. Senior Tylisha Crockett made second team and led the Northern Neck District in three-point shots.
Making the Conference #43 all-academic team were Katie Crowther, Shirleya Henry and Rajaa Shabazz.
