Area wrestlers take on statewide tournaments

Last weekend, four wrestlers from Northumberland and two from Lancaster High School competed at statewide tournaments in Richmond.
The Virginia Challenge Wrestling (VACW) Freshman, Sophomore, Junior States was held Saturday at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond. The tournament was open to all High school and club wrestlers in the state. There were 330 wrestlers from around the state at this tournament.
From Northumberland, Kevin Hanks led the team with a 2nd place overall in the junior division at 138 pounds. Also participating were Kyle Hanks at 138 pounds and Billy Pipkin at 126 pounds. The three wrestlers were representing the Northern Neck Wrestling Club. Juniors Pipkin and Hanks combined for a total of 26 points, leasing the NNWC to place third among 42 competing clubs.
From Lancaster, Sam Bouis placed first at 285 pounds while Kenique Stewart was second in the 145-pound class. Lancaster finished 20th in the sophomore division among many schools having multiple wrestlers.
