Softball team set for a tough schedule

The always-upbeat Northumberland Softball Coach Allison Cockrell made the following observations: this year’s schedule is much tougher than in previous years.
Cockrell wants her charges to be ready for some higher-level competition.
“We are challenging ourselves with a new conference schedule,” Cockrell said. “We have nine returnees, our pitcher is back, we have good leadership, starters coming back and exciting new talent.”
As for any possible weaknesses in the team, Cockrell said the players just had to find out how they play together.
We have one of the toughest conferences in the state; the whole conference, from top to bottom, is loaded.”
In the girls’ first scrimmage last week against West Point, the Lady Indians came out with an unofficial score of 17-0 in their favor.
Cockrell said she was pleased with the pitching but added that the team has “a lot of things to work on.”
This week marks the beginning of the regular season, weather permitting. The Lady Indians will compete this Friday and Saturday in the Sports Plus Tourney in Richmond against premier competition from the area.
The JV girls were unable to play their scrimmage due to scheduling difficulties.
