The Northumberland girls soccer team held their ground against the visiting Rappahannock County Panthers in a scrimmage that ended under the lights last Friday.
While the Panthers outscored the Indians 1-0 in the regular portion of the game, Northumberland Head Coach Mark Fridenstine noted how well the Indians played against Rappahannock County.
He added that the Panthers team may have underestimated their opponent going into the game.
Both teams were aggressive and strong on defense, with neither side scoring in the opening 40-minute half of the scrimmage. With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the game switched to a shoot-out, with five players attempting kicks from each team. During the shoot-out, four players scored for the Panthers; seniors Alexandra Pitman and India Eguiguren made goals for Northumberland.
For 2014, the Girls Soccer team has 18 players listed with 11 seniors, five juniors and two sophomores. Assisting Fridenstine on the coaching staff are Lisa Roberts and Becky Jones. Teams captains for the 2014 season are seniors #0-Sydney Setser, Goalie, #1-Carrie Jo Jett, Forward, and #8-Bridgette McLaughlin, Forward.
Representing the senior class on the team are #3-Johnnie McAfee, Defender, #4-Abby Loving, Midfielder, #5-Emily
