Northumberland boys triumph at track meet, girls finish second

The 2014 outdoor track season kicked off at Northumberland on a cold but sunny day last Thursday with the promise of good things to come. Northumberland topped their three opponents in the boys’ meet and finished second for the girls’ meet.
For the girls, Mathews won with 84 points, followed by Northumberland with 68, Charles City 21 and Washington and Lee rounding out the teams with a surprisingly low score of 16.
The girls’ meet featured Trinity Bea in her first year of varsity competition. Bea won the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter races. Amya Seldon, following in the footsteps of family, took the 100-meter race as well as the long jump. Sarah Schindler had a win in the 3,200 meters for Northumberland.
For the boys, Northumberland won with 77 points followed by Mathews with 53 and Charles City tying Washington and Lee for third place with 39 .
Kiondre Owens sparked the Indians with triple wins in the 100, 200 and 400-meter events.
Ameer Veny took both the high and 300 intermediate hurdle races. Daniel Kernan took the discus contest.
