The Northumberland Indians celebrate their Conference #43 tourney championship.

The Northumberland varsity baseball team put together two of their best played games this season in sweeping to the Conference 43 championship at Dream Fields in Kilmarnock. On Wednesday in a five inning contest, they ousted Essex 11-1. Friday, they topped Rappahannock High from Warsaw, 9-0.

On Tuesday, in the opening round, the Indians drew a bye as regular season champions Essex topped Colonial Beach, Rappahannock in Warsaw sent Rappahannock County home and Lancaster topped W&L.

In the semi-finals on Thursday in the second game, Rappahannock struggled to get an eight-inning 4-3 win over Lancaster. A stolen third base plus a passed ball gave the Raiders their win. Struggling and a close game weren’t the order in the Northumberland game.

The Indians wasted little time against the Trojans, scoring five runs in the home half of the first inning. With one out, Josh Hinson walked and Jack Jett was safe on an error. Brandon Walker singled to score Hinson, Blake Walker singled to score Jett. With runners at first and third and two outs, Zak Kent reached on an error, scoring Brandon; he then stole second. Trevor Cantrell walked to load the bases, and the Northumberland crowd was loving every minute of the game. Brennon Saunders singled to drive in a run, and Mathew Harris did the same. In the second inning, Jett singled, Brandon was hit by a pitch as was Blake. Kent’s sacrifice helped score the Indians a run.
