Northumberland High School varsity baseball team wins 1A state championship, hands Honaker first loss of season with 9-3 final score
Virginia High School League 1A state champions for the year 2014 has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
State champions, the best this year for the entire state of Virginia, and well-earned. Sharing honors with the Northumberland High School varsity baseball team is the Rappahannock Raiders varsity softball team. The championships are the first ever awarded under the Virginia High School League’s new six-tiered division of the state public schools to both teams.
Several times a bridesmaid but never a bride, this trip marked the third trip for Coach Ellen Corum Gaines, who had never won the championship.
But 2014 was the magic year as the Region 1A East runner-up took down Auburn 7-5 and avenged an earlier defeat by William Campbell with a 5-0 final score.
And it was a magic year for coach Johnny Mothershead and his charges. On Friday, they beat last year’s state champion Auburn, 12-6. On Saturday, they topped Honaker 9-3, handing them their first loss of the season.
