Northumberland County Little League boys and girls teams get their game on
Little League tournament play for Major boys and girls, age 11-12 enters its second full week. Already complete are the Minor girls and boys, age 9-10 year-olds.
After having one of their best years, the Minor boys finished in fourth place in their tournament here at the Heathsville Little League Park.
They opened with a loss but rebounded for three straight wins before losing to eventual district champions, Essex.
Making up the 2014 team were Shane Bryant, Dylan Davis, Chase Fisher, Gavyn Hathaway, Tyler Mann, Brock Martin, Nick Mothershead, Carson Saunders, J.T. Sheridan, Luke Swann, C.J. Timberlake, Brandon Washington and Harrison Williams. Chip Williams was the manager with Chris Saunders and Chris Timberlake as coaches.
“We had a really good tournament,” Coach Saunders said. “I was really proud of them.”
The Minor girls, playing at the Middlesex Little League Park, didn’t fare as well. They lost their first two games and were eliminated from the tournament.
Major League action started this past weekend. The boys, playing at Caroline, are under a new format this year. The 12 teams are broken down into four pools of three teams each. The top two teams from each pool advance to tournament play. Northumberland took a big step toward advancing with a 15-0 win over Spotsylvania on Sunday.
The Major girls, laying at King William, won their Saturday opener, 8-0 over King George, but lost Sunday, 15-0, to a very strong Mathews squad. The 2014 team is made up of Taylor Bayse, Breanna Davis, Brittany Davis, Hannah Hayes, Malerie Hinson, Hannah Loving, Emily McYoung, Kelsey Moss, McKensey Smithart and Natalie Webb. Bill Moss is the manager with Tina Moss and Matt Webb as coaches.
Both the boys and the girls complete district play this week.
Editor’s Note: The Minor Girls and Major boys team rosters are slated to appear in a later edition of the Northumberland Echo.
