Onward to All-Stars for Northumberland Athletes: Brandon Walker wins MVP

The 2013-2014 high school sports season is in the books.

Two Northumberland High School athletes were chosen to play in the Virginia High School League Coaches All-Star games at Liberty University in Lynchburg last week.

Connor Haislip was selected to play in the girls’ volleyball game Thursday afternoon. Brandon Walker made the all-star team for baseball and played Thursday night.

For his play, Brandon received the trophy as the East’s Most Valuable Player.

The selection process has the respective high school coach making a nomination. The coaches’ association of the sport of players involved then makes the final choice. The high school athletic director is notified and they, in turn, tell the player.

Haislip knew of her honor in January. Walker found out just before the baseball season closed, but it was kept quiet for the team to concentrate on their state championship run.

Once they are chosen, the players are divided by located into east and west teams, playing with others from across the state in all school sizes.

Coming from a 1A, the smallest sized school, they must play with and against others all the way to the largest sized schools, 6A.

Coaches for the two teams come from those schools who had won or participated in state championship games the previous year.

Haislip, no stranger to honors such as this one, was the 2013-14 female athlete of the year for the Indians. Last year, she was voted first team All Conference, All District and All State for both the Virginia high School League and the volleyball Coaches Association.

Haislip has played volleyball four years on the varsity level and one year on the JV squad. This past season, she was the team’s Libero, a back row specialist position that allows unlimited substitution at the coach’s…
