Northern Neck Rivermen defeat Stags, improve to 3-0
Devonte Reynolds, Northern Neck Rivermen
The Northern Neck Rivermen traveled to Cumberland, Md to face the Western Maryland Stags in their third game of the semi-pro football Mason Dixon Football League season. The long ride that began in Fredericksburg with stops in King George and Waldorf, Md gave the coaching staff more time to work on their game plan. It must’ve been a good one, because they defeated the Stags (70-12). The Rivermen got contributions from all facets of the team (offense, defense, and special teams).
Quarterback Walt Covington hit Tim Short with an eleven yard pass to put his team up (7-0) then Mike Howard returned a punt 75yds for a touchdown to increase the lead to (14-0). As they have done in all of their games the Rivermen let the other team back into the game; the Stags scored on two pass plays to cut the lead to (14-12) at the half.
The second half was all Rivermen; they put up 56 points. Mike Howard, Antonio Fernanders (2), Bryan Brooks, Alon Clipper (2), Raheem White, and Josh Steele all scored touchdowns. Will Hoover had five touchdown passes, and accumulated 225 yards. The defense kept the offense in good field possession with three interceptions (one returned for a TD). They had five sacks; Sayon Lembrick led with two. Devonte Reynolds has an interception in the last two games.
The Rivermen’s next game will be at King George High School on August 9 versus the defending Champion Virginia Crusaders; both teams are undefeated. This game benefited the Special Olympics.
