Coach Marcus Ferguson is a tall man and can be intimidating if need be, but that didn’t shy away the Lancaster JV Girls Basketball Team from asking him to coach them for the first time. By the end of the regular season, their efforts turned out to be effective with the team having one of its best regular seasons in school history.
At the end of last week, the Lady Red Devils celebrated their eight-game winning streak and finished as the Northern Neck District’s regular season district champions. This comes after posting an overall record of 13-4, 8-1 in the district.
“They are all hard workers and winners, and took the challenge. I just asked them to show up everyday to work hard and enjoy it…they did what they had to do,” said Ferguson.
“I really enjoyed it and I didn’t know what to expect,” Ferguson said. “They just bought into what I was trying to teach them and did good this year.”
The high school football and track & field coach said the girls were not nervous to ask for his help this season. In fact, they repeatedly asked him on a number of occasions.
“They came to me and really wanted to have someone that would make them work hard,” Ferguson. “That’s what they wanted, they wanted to work hard and wanted to be successful.”
Ferguson said he would consider coaching again next season.
“If they want me to return, I will,” Ferguson said. “I just want to thank the girls for working hard and putting in the time, believing in themselves and wanting to be winners.”
