Little League festivities set to get underway
Children, parents and volunteers from around the region will be suiting up to celebrate an annual sports event within the next two weeks. Specifically from the Northern Neck, five representatives of District 15 will be hosting their opening ceremonies for 2013 Little League season.
The festivities, as a result of rainfall, has been rescheduled to April 19 at 7 p.m. in Tappahannock where the Essex County Little League will be having a special guest

throw out the first pitch. The event will be held at the Essex County Little League Field.
During the same period the Diamond Award will be given out by the organization before the minor league game is played at about 8:15 p.m. and the first set of games begin on April 13.
On April 12, Lancaster will be having their opening ceremony at Dreamfields beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The next morning at Montross Middle School, the Westmoreland County Little League (WCLL) will have its opening ceremony beginning at 9 a.m.
“We are very excited about our opening day this year. This will be the first year that Westmoreland County Little League has hosted its opening day with a “complex-type” atmosphere,” said Westmoreland Little League president Michael Clark. “Over 300 young athletes with ages ranging from 4 to 16 will take the field to compete in over a dozen games. Utilizing all three fields at Montross Middle School will allow us to have three games being played simultaneously for most of the day. In the past we have played one game at a time.”
Clark said hamburgers, hot dogs, and Pop King’s world famous crab cakes will be available at the concessions trailer. Vendors and the WCLL dunking booth will also be on hand.
With three teams kicking off the festivities, the Little League organizations from Northumberland and Richmond Counties will be ending the period on April 20.
Northumberland will be having their opening ceremony to begin at noon at the Ballpark on Academic Lane
“We’ll be recognizing our sponsors, having prayer and playing baseball,” said Northumberland Little League president Chris Timberlake.
Richmond County Little League will begin their ceremony at 10 a.m. after games begin on April 13.
“Mr. Dean Loudy will be our special guest, known as the Voice of the Northern Neck, and WNNT Radio and WKWI in Kilmarnock,” said Richmond County Little League President Shirley Lucas. “He is considered to be the first Little League Baseball Coach in Richmond County.”
