Hard workers key to success for Devils’ football
Damien Crissey, like many new coaches this season, is excited about leading a football team this season. But not to let the power go to his head, Crissey is looking to his fellow coaching staff members to spark the new look Lancaster Football Team.
“It’s been a very good transition and I haven’t had to change a lot,” Crissey said. “I’m definitely excited to get the season started.”
Along with succeeding retired coach Fred Birchett, the football program also lost quarterback Kedrick Lee, running back TreVaughn Davis and lineman Kai Antonio.
“We’ve got a mix of kids who are going to get touches during the game,” Crissey said.
Senior Ricky Gibson returns this season for the Red Devils playing behind center at the quarterback position in the spread offense.
Senior wide receivers Kaliq Noel and Demetric Lee return as well along with linemen Devont’e Haskins and William Smith.
Crissey said it was helpful that players were used to him as an assistant under Birchett. During the team meeting before the season, Crissey said he and the coaching staff made it very clear their expectations.
“We told them you need to be here for the right reasons and if you’re not then you probably won’t be around. You need to come and work everyday, and we’re going to put the best 11 guys on the field for offense, defense and special teams. Hopefully that way we’ll be successful,” Crissey said.
Senior halfback Shane Chambers joins the Red Devils and will see some time at the inside linebacker position. Junior wide receiver Tyrell Henderson, junior lineman Dominique Taylor and junior running back Justin Washington are among the top newcomers.
