The Callao Volunteer Fire Department couldn’t have picked a more perfect day than Saturday for its the Annual Corn Hole Tournament and Pig Picking, There was a cooling breeze, offset with a warming sun to keep tournament participants, as well as those watching, comfortable. It was a great day to be outside.
The Ruritan Lot gate opened at 12:30 with the tournament scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. By 1:50 only five teams had signed up to play, much to the consternation of those running the tournament. Ten minutes later there were 11 teams ready to pair off and the games began on time. There were many excellent players and the games continued the rest of the afternoon until finally there were only three teams left. Billy Healy and JT, (Healy first met JT that day and didn’t know his name other than JT), but they came in First Place, David Dunaway and Matt Sines came in second, and Travis Marks and Mark Hinson came in third.
Other teams were: Curtis and Justin Albrite (a father/son team), Daniel and Jason Deitz (a brothers team), Jeremy Douglas and Brad Smith, Michael Hale and Rick King, Glenn Clark and Dan Thompson, Lee Ambrose and Kevin Harrison, Zack Kues and Allan Bryant, Jerry Miles and Dwayne Taylor.
By the time the tournament ended, everyone was ready for the Pig Picking provided by Fred’s BBQ served on buns, with cole slaw, baked beans and choice of beverage. Picnic tables surrounded the ball diamond with overflow diners eating in the bleachers. There was D J music during dining., Then from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.there was music played by the HonkeyTonk Heroes to be enjoyed under the night’s full moon.
