Lady Indians open new season strong
With the opening week of the 2013-2014 basketball season in the record books,
Rajaa Shabazz has emerged as one of the standouts on this year’s Northumberland Basketball Team.
the Northumberland Lady Indians are sitting on top of a 3-0 record. This comes after claiming wins last week Tuesday over Mathews, 52-28, Wednesday at King and Queen, 46-10, and a big win at the Northern Neck Rivalry Tip-Off on Saturday, 53-33, over Lancaster.
In Tuesday’s opener, the Mathews Lady Blue Devils took it to the Indians in the opening moments of play. They took a 7-0 lead and held on to a 14-11 first quarter advantage.
“They jumped on us early,” said Northumberland coach Lewis Howard. “Then we played better ball.”
By halftime the Indians had gotten their act together and went on for the win.
“We took better shots and moved the ball around better,” Howard said.
Tylisha Crockett had the hot shooting hand with a game high 21 points including three treys. Rajaa Shabazz had 12 with Shirleya Henry knocking down 11 including three treys.
