After a fire in the ancient Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern in Heathsville several years ago, its board decided to hold on to what insurance money it got and take out a mortgage to fully restore it.
That mortgage is “an albatross around our necks” Corinne Becker the hotel/tavern’s executive director said Monday. “Now, we want to pay it off.”
They made a good start Saturday with a “Mortgage burning” barbecue on the lawn. 200 people shelled out donations to come and eat pork and chicken barbecue and sausages along with baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad and desserts. While they ate and chatted at tables under a huge tent the hotel/tavern had erected, they listened to music provided by “The Articles” out of Richmond.
“We netted about $5000,” Becker said.
