American Legion teams begin District Tournament

The regular season is over and the District 12/13 playoffs began Monday in the double elimination tourney for the opportunity to advance to the state championships in August that will be held in Lynchburg. American Legion Post #86, hosted by the Kilmarnock Legion Post with the number three seed opens with a game in Charlottesville with the number two seed team.

As in the past, the team is made up of players from the surrounding counties of Essex, Lancaster, Mathews, Northumberland and Richmond. The teams this year has the following Northumberland players with their respective positions: Nick Basye (pitcher/short stop), Tyler Deitz (inf/off), Blake Edwards (catcher), Bowe Rogers (pitcher/off), and Zack Swift (first base/ pitcher). Bruce Northern is the manager with Rob Basye and Tom Kleinfelter as coaches.

America Legion ball allows for players who have finished their respective high school careers and younger ones to compete. The Post #86  team is the defending Virginia state runner-up and has a 10-5 record this year.
