Music brought the auditorium of Northumberland High School to life over the weekend for an inspiring evening of hope and charity. The weather was chilly and rainy but could not dim the spirits of all of those in attendance at the Northumberland Chapter of the American Red Cross’s “Raising Hope Around the World” benefit concert. In light of the recent hurricane devastation in Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico, our local chapter sprang quickly into action to help in any way possible. As a result, volunteers put their heads together to plan a unique event to uplift and unite community members for the cause.
Cheerful volunteers greeted attendees at the door to hand out programs for the evening and to accept donations being given. Once concert-goers were ushered in and seated, community volunteer leader, Shirley Grant, warmly welcomed all in attendance and gave a brief overview of the goals of both the local and national chapters. A large “money thermometer” was displayed on the stage with dollar amounts ranging from $0 to $12,000. Grant explained that the goal of our local chapter is to raise at least $10,000. At the beginning of the evening the gauge sat somewhere around $4,000 as a result of donations given prior to the concert.
