Aquatics way of life

On November 16, the Northern Neck Family YMCA will break ground on a $3.1 million aquatic center featuring a six-lane indoor pool that’s sanctioned for USA Swimming meets and an outdoor pool with a double-turn slide. It’ll be unlike anything that’s publicly available in this region, said Mark Favazza, branch executive director.
The YMCA plans to use the facility to embed aquatic activity and water safety as a common thread in the community. So, unlike the current pools, this facility will be built out from the main campus on William B. Graham Court in Kilmarnock.
“We want to be known for specializing in two things and doing them extremely well. Aquatics is one of them,” said Favazza. And the YMCA is especially proud that both new pools will have wheelchair-friendly, zero-depth entry lanes, which makes them completely accessible. “We want anybody, regardless of their physical abilities to be able to get in and out of our pools.
