The Northumberland Chapter for the American Red Cross held its first blood drive for the 2018 year on February 5 at the volunteer rescue squad in Callao.
Among one of the first donors to arrive was Odessa Roane from Westmoreland County. Roane has been donating blood to the American Red Cross for 50 years. “I want to do all I can to help,” said Roane.
“She is faithful; she is always an hour early so she can be one of the first,” said Shirley Grant.
Grant is the Community Volunteer Leader for the Northumberland Chapter and stated that Roane has donated over 27 gallons during her 50 years as a donor. “ She has all of her donor cards for the last 50 years. It’s her way of giving to her community. She’s extremely dedicated,” Grant said.
The drive fell short of its goal of 41 donors but spirits are high that more donors will come forward.
