The Northern Neck Master Gardeners invites Dr. Tim McCoy, Virginia Cooperative Extension Associate with Virginia Tech’s Department of Entomology to participate in their July 11 meeting at the Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett Tavern’s Transportation Building in Heathsville.

McCoy, will talk about how to use insecticides without harming pollinating insects such as bees.

Bees aren’t the only insects that pollinate flowers and other plants, Trent Jones of the Northumberland Agricultural Extension Office said Friday. Not only that, but they are not the only ones that can be killed by the improper use of pesticides. McCoy will talk about the states “Pollinator Protection Program,” part of a national effort to mitigate the effects of pesticides on pollinators.

McCoy will talk about the program and research findings on the effects of pesticides, particularly on native bees. He will also advise those at the meeting about how help pollinators thrive.
