Neil Barber, who led a meeting of GO Virginia’s Region 6 in Heathsville last Monday, was pleased with the crowd that attended. “It was a great turn out; quite a diverse group,” Barber said.
GO Virginia is a state initiative aimed at creating more and higher paying jobs. The Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula are joined with Fredericksburg to form Region 6. The meeting in Heathsville at the Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern transportation building was primarily a brainstorming session to help Barber develop a plan that will be submitted to the state suggesting ways to create and draw higher paying jobs to the area. If accepted, the state may make up to $500,000 in grants available to those with ideas for boosting the number and pay rates of regional jobs.
Barber stressed that the ideas the state will support must be directed at job creation and higher wages.
“Higher wages” mean “above the median wages for the sub-region,” which in the local area means the Northern Neck. Barber said that the median wage for the Northern Neck is $17 an hour. (Median does not mean average. It means the mid-way point.) Wages of $20 an hour would be a good improvement of the sort GO Virginia is looking for.
