Mid-County Rescue Squad’s Janice Kauffman laid it out plainly at a meeting between Northumberland County’s emergency service providers and its board of supervisors last Wednesday night.
“Truthfully, the state would like to do away with volunteer organizations,” she said.
But Northumberland’s volunteers aren’t quite ready to quit. “We’ve got great equipment. We need people who can use it,” Callao Rescue Squad’s Larry Bahl said. “You’ve got to give us some relief someplace.”
The problem all the rescues squads are encountering, they agreed, is that there are too few trained people to handle all their runs.
