On Monday evening, Fairfield’s Volunteer Fire Department in Reedville and Omega Protein, along with people of Reedville and the area around it, gave Danny Haynie the key to the town.
Haynie, who started Reedville’s 4th of July parade in 1956 even before he was old enough to join the fire department, was this year’s grand marshal.
Haynie recalled that he became a member of Fairfield’s Volunteer Fire Department when he turned 21 and served on it for 47 years. The members of the department always helped him line up entries for the parade and pick the grand marshals, he said.
When Phillip Keyser decided that Northumberland County should have its own Little League baseball program, Haynie said he thought he should help him and volunteered his services as umpire. In that capacity, he helped others learn how to be umps.
Haynie said that he really appreciated the help over the years from Omega Protein and its Randy Hall and Monty Diehl and he particularly appreciated all the help from the fire department’s captain, Phillip Keyser. He also noted that his former wife, Margaret R. Branch has always been a great source of help.
The plaque given Haynie in the ceremony will be on permanent display at the fire department.
