Caleb Davis became the only Northumberland wrestler to qualify for the state championships next weekend at Salem, Virginia. He did it in fine fashion with three wins, all three by pins and was selected as The Wrestler of the Year for the 1A Eastern Region, recording six votes of the twelve coaches present. He competed along with the Indians team at the lA East torney at Riverheads High School last weekend. He now moves on to the Virginia High School League’s 1A state championships at Salem, Virginia.
In their first completion in Region lA East, the Riverheads were the dominant team, winning six individual weight classes and far out distancing the rest of the field. Team scores were Riverheads,
238.5; Northampton, 164; Rappahannock County, 153; Stonewall Jackson, 117; Middlesex, 114.5; Mathews, 105; Franklin, 104; Cumberland, 100.5; Lancaster, 70.5, Essex, 31; Northumberland 28; and Chincoteague with 14.
Also appearing for the Indians were Trinity Taylor, Kevin O’Malley, Clay Cash, Lazareth Tschantre, Augie Swisher and Jermal Thompson. Tschantre won one match before losing out, the others all lost their first two matches.
