Feast to fight fires

Nearly 200 patrons made their way to the Callao Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) for great seafood and a good time. On Saturday, March 4, the CVFD held their annual Shrimp and Oyster Feast featuring, of course, shrimp and oysters from locally owned Reamy Seafood, Inc. For nearly 10 years the CVFD has been serving up this feast as one of their main fundraising events.

About 400 pounds of shrimp and 50 bushels of oysters were served up. The spread also featured hot dogs, bean soup and homemade desserts along with soft drinks and “golden beverages.” Friendly volunteers made sure to keep the tables full and offered participation in their 50/50 raffle.

While their annual Pig Pickin’ in the summer is their top moneymaker, fundraising throughout the year helps allow the dedicated men and women of the CVFD to do what they do to support the citizens of the Northumberland. Recently they were able to purchase a brand new Smeal Fire Apparatus Co. custom side-mount pumper, known as “Wagon 64.” The apparatus was featured at the Virginia Fire and Rescue Conference in Virginia Beach on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25. This has been a dream come true for the CVFD.
