About a dozen Northumberland County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers and members of the county’s two volunteer fire departments met at the sheriff’s office in Heathsville Monday night. David Zimbro of Zimbro Aerial Drone Integration Services was also there to acquaint the group with the drones his company is now making available to the sheriff’s department and the fire departments.
Deputy Logan Fisher took them through a review of the departments’ basic run areas, their command structures and talked about the capacities and use of the departments’ vehicles. Both he and the firemen were available for any questions the dispatchers might have of them. For example, the one of the dispatchers asked how long it takes to refill the tankers. With that information, the dispatchers, which can track the vehicles, can keep the firemen abreast of how soon they can expect tankers sent to refill back on the scene of a fire. One fireman asked that the dispatchers try and obtain reference points, such as subdivision names, since new streets in subdivisions are often neither on maps nor familiar to the firemen.
