Where can you get a day of fun for kids and adults while getting sun and exercise? Sarah Harman, organizer of the Lewisetta Junior Angler Fishing Tournament, figured it out. Saturday, July 29, dawned gray and rainy. At Lewisetta General Store, owners Mark and Helen Scerbo stood on the porch watching the drizzle fall and flags snap in the wind as their friendly store kitty waited for scratches. Soon Sarah showed up and reassured everyone that it would be rescheduled for the next day. Sunday came and the weather was perfect, if not a little bit windy. Fifty-seven kids had registered, and fifty-one showed up even with the reschedule. Kids lined the dock, shore, and boats in their brightly colored Junior Angler Fishing Tournament T-shirts to enjoy a day of fishing and fun. Each and every one of them had caught one or two by the end of the tournament.
The community came together, and sponsors such as RW’s Sports, Backdraft, Callao Market, RMC Mechanical, W.C. Lowery, Flipping Yellow Truck, At Home Printing, Bleak House Farm, Hank & Teresa Chaney, Ragged Point Marketing, George & Donna Truslow, Ron Flowers, Joe Self Realty, Captain Scottie Moss, Allison’s Ace Hardware, Captain Michael Hopkins of the Virgina Beach Fire Department, Cowart Seafood, Flowers Bakery, and Food Lion came together to support the event. Others gathered to cook hot dogs and hamburgers for the anglers and keep them hydrated with drinks.
