Local emergency officials and the Virginia State Police responded Friday to a two-vehicle accident on Route 360 East outside of Callao in which one driver was freed from entrapment within his car and airlifted from the scene.
Involved were Thomas Clohan, 66, of Fredericksburg, and Norman Dodson, 59, of Heathsville.
According to VSP Trooper Patrick McCranie, he had pulled his dump truck, to which a two-axle trailer was attached, out of a driveway, was getting up to speed and had proceeded about 300 yards when the trailer was struck from behind by Clohan’s Honda. The hood of Clohan’s car went through the windshield and over his head.
As a result of the accident, Clohan was trapped in the car and the local fire department had to cut him out of the vehicle, McCranie said. Responders to the scene were unable to determine the reason for why Clohan ran into the back of the trailer.
Clohan was speaking, but disoriented, and was complaining that he could not feel some of his extremities.
He was medevacked to VCU Medical Center in Richmond in serious to critical condition. There was no further report regarding his status as of presstime.
Dodson did not sustain any injuries or damage to his vehicle. McCranie said it did not appear that alcohol was a factor and added that both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.
