The Callao community’s vision, through the perseverance of the Revitalization Project Management Team, will soon be realized! Within the next few weeks there will be tangible changes in Callao. After years of hard work, many decisions and much negotiation, the Business District Revitalization project will become a reality. Buildings will be painted, facades will be altered, new street lights installed, sidewalks improved, new crosswalks designated, and speed signs made visible.
It should not go unsaid that without the assistance and cooperation of Northumberland County, none of this would be possible for the community. Because Callao is unincorporated, the county has had to take on additional responsibilities to enable Callao to receive the benefit of Community Development Block Grant funds. The county will manage all associated recordkeeping and ensure all requirements of the grant are met. Throughout the process, the Northern Neck Planning District Commission has been instrumental in the community’s success as well. They have provided guidance and assistance and put in long hours to help this project become reality. The Board of Supervisors’ $25,000 pledge was of vital importance to the third grant application and receipt of the $700,000 grant award.
