Three Days out of school and limited practice time didn’t stop the Northumberland Indians guys basketball team from adding two more wins last week including a big one within the conference. On Thursday, they traveled to Middlesex and came home with a 75-56 victory. On Friday, the Indians overcame a slow start with a strong third period to top Colonial Beach, 63-52.
Thursday, the Indians raced to a 21-12 first quarter lead but also raced to some foul problems. With the Chargers in the one and one free throw shooting mode, they made it pay to keep pressure on the Indians. As a team, they hit 22 of 30 from the charity stripe, continually cutting the Indians lead to under 10 points. By half time the Indians lead 42-24.
Northumberland put together another strong third period with a 23-12 advantage before emptying the bench to give the subs some game time. In another balanced scoring game, Delvin Palmer led Northumberland scoring with fifteen points. Joining him in double figures were Joseth Tarleton and Rayquan Ball with thirteen each, and Dequine Johnson with eleven. Christian Rich scored eight. Johnson picked off 12 rebounds, Ball seven, Tavon Thompson and Damonte Thornton, six each. Palmer had eight assists and four steals. Ball had four assists and four steals, Tarleton had four assists and three steals. Johnson had three steals.
