On Saturday, July 15, the sun was already warm at 8 a.m. even though dark clouds rolled across the sky. Chickens of a half dozen different breeds clucked and pecked around the gravel driveway, and horses snorted and stamped in the field just past the huge silver grain silos. Scents of summer and the farm waited to greet any guests who would arrive. The tractor sat waiting to pull the hay wagon, and empty boxes sat ready to be filled with corn.
At Holyoke Farm the family had been up for hours getting ready to receive guests, and help, for the YMCA of Northumberland Farm & Family Day. The event was set up to pick fresh, delicious, sweet corn and donate it to Northern Neck Food Bank. Just the previous Thursday they had harvested about 5,000 pounds of corn for the Food Bank, and were aiming to get them some more.
