The children’s gift shop was again the highlight of Heathsville’s Golden Village Christmas Saturday. Individuals, organizations, and businesses had donated about 1000 gift items for the youngsters to buy for a dollar each. While no precise count was available Sunday, Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern executive director Corinne Becker said the children were limited to 10 gifts each and almost all were sold by the end of the day. The gifts offered ranged from jewelry and board games to stuffed animals and items of clothing.
Santa Claus, portrayed by Bob Surina, charmed the youngsters with his “Ho, ho, ho” laugh. He didn’t have to fake it. “That’s Bob’s real laugh,” Becker said.
Vendors had set up tents around the Tavern’s grounds at which visitors perused the good son offer. Fortunately, while the weather was gray and damp, it didn’t rain and the tents weren’t needed to ward off a down pour or even a heavy sprinkle.
