Rice Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern in Heathsville planned a “soft opening” for its Heritage Arts Center Wednesday. In the sense that the opening wasn’t advertised, it was soft. It wasn’t soft at all in the commercial sense.
Judy Mooers, who is leading the effort, said that members of the Tavern’s quilters and crafting guilds saw the preparations for the center and descended on it as soon as the doors opened. “We had a flurry of business,” Mooers said.
Mooers said that after the last restaurant operation in the ancient tavern closed, the board decided to try something different. While the small area called the “tap room” remains dedicated to a breakfast and lunch restaurant, almost all the lower part of the tavern is now dedicated to stations where artists and crafters can work, a large display area for wares and a room where classes can be held.
