After a vote, it was decided by the Essex County Homeless Organization’s Board of Directors that this community resource will be shut down. “We simply haven’t gotten the volunteer support at the administrative level to overcome all of the obstacles that have been placed before us in our efforts to help the homeless and move forward on our work with homeless prevention,” said Mary Wigmore, Vice President of the organization in an email sent out on April 16 announcing the closure. She continues in the email, “There has been minimal cooperation at the township and county levels… ordinances have been passed that allow a homeless shelter to operate with severe restrictions on where, when and how long the shelter can be open. There are even restrictions on who we can serve and what services we can provide.
