Last Thursday, Northumberland High School held its Spring Sports Athletic Awards Ceremony. After Principal Dr. Travis Burns made his opening remarks, he turned the microphone over to Coach Eddie Barnes for a special recognition. Coach Barnes began speaking of the year 1983 when he first came to Northumberland and of an individual he had met that year. Then, to make sure there was no question about who he was speaking of, he shed his sweat pants to reveal he was wearing walking shorts and blaze red socks. He asked the “red socks” man, Lee Scripture, to join him on stage. Rev. Scripture joined him on stage to a standing ovation from the audience.
Coach Barnes presented him with a plague that read “Presented to Lee Scripture: In recognition and appreciation for 36 years of supporting the athletic programs of Northumberland High School. Your commitment to exceptional journalism has positively reflected on our student-athletes, school, and community. Presented with gratitude to you as a partner in the service of student athletes. Northumberland High School.”
