Joint Convocation for Lancaster and Northumberland county school systems

Northumberland hosted Lancaster  to a continental breakfast last Thursday before the dual Convocation, held  in the Northumberland High School Auditorium where Virginia Secretary of Education, Ann Holton, was the featured Speaker.

The Convocation began with the Presentation of Colors by the Northumberland JROTC, followed by thePledge of Allegiance. “The National Anthem” was sung by Anajah Carter and  Annie Saunders, followed by Mrs. Martha Hicks singing “ God Bless America.”

As Northumberland School Superintendent, Dr. Rebecca Gates,  or  Lancaster Superintendent, Steve Parker,  recognized each divisions  of their schools there was much applause from the audience as each school tried to outdo the other in applauding. After all the two schools are longtime sports rivals. Following Mr. Parker’s introducing his schools staff he had both school’s staff members stand and remarked they all looked like Christmas trees, this was in reference to the green shirts worn by Northumberland staff members and the red shirts worn by Lancaster’s staff.

This was  followed by remarks from  Northumberland School Board Chairman, Richard Saxer who concluded his remarks with, “I hope you all had a good breakfast and I want to welcome you all, and especially Secretary Holton, to God’s Country, Northumberland County.”

He  introduced  Delegate Margaret Ransone, who said the education of children is one of the greatest callings there is. She said she wanted the people to know, as their representative in Richmond, that she and the other  delegates are there to help in all ways and in any way we can, and, as a kick start, are going to…
