A mislabeled gas pump at the Exxon Service Station in Kilmarnock may have caused customers to mistakenly buy gasoline instead of kerosene. According to Lancaster Department of Emergency Services, the mislabeling happened when a long time kerosene pump was converted to a non-ethanol gas pump identified as number seven, located on the School Street side of the station.
The pump is currently serving non-ethanol gasoline and does not have markings on one side. The concern is that people may have pumped gas at pump seven without knowing it had been changed over to non-ethanol gasoline and was no longer a kerosene pump. Mistaking kerosene with gasoline can be very dangerous.
According to Lancaster County Emergency Services, putting gasoline in a kerosene appliance can cause a fire or even an explosion.
