Kicking off fall sports in Northumberland

Posted on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 2:15 pm

The cross country team, the Harriers, are rounding into shape under new head Coach Trinity Bea. Bea stated this week with five guys, enough for a team, but only three young ladies. She added that she hoped for some more participants in the coming days. The Harriers get into action on September 4 with a five team meet at Mathews.

The field hockey squad has made their cuts and will open their season on August 26 with a varsity only game at 2A Bruton. With the current schedule, the Lady Indians will not face a 1A school until the playoffs, if then. Coach Mark Fridenstine and staff have their work cut out for them with the loss of so many seniors to graduation. The Lady Indians have home games on the schedule prior to school opening. On August 27, 2A New Kent will be here and on the 29 3A Colonial Heights will visit the Heathsville campus. JV games start at 5 p.m. with the varsity set for 6:30.

The football team has worked extensively with both their offense and defense. This last week they began assigning positions on their special teams; kick-off and receiving, punting and receiving. They have a scrimmage set at West Point at 12 p.m. with both the varsity and JV teams. It’s ironic that this “game” has been replayed the last two years as the opening game in the Region 1A East playoffs.
