Lady Indians, Devils advance to state tournament

State quarterfinals: March 1-2

Lancaster and Northumberland marked their fifth meeting last week, and could have an opportunity to meet each other once again. With Lancaster settling a 3-2 lead following the region championship, both teams will now try their hand against the rest of the Commonwealth in the Group A Division 2 State Tournament.

On Feb. 23, third seeded Lancaster defeated fourth seeded Northumberland 45-44 in the Region A Division 2 championship at Lancaster High School. Both teams will compete in the Group A Division 2 Girls State Tournament on this weekend.

In the Region A Division 2 quarterfinals, seventh seeded Essex fell to second seeded Mathews 58-56 in game three; Lancaster won over sixth seeded Nandua 76-20; and Northumberland dropped Sussex 68-47.

In the days to follow, Lancaster defeated second seeded Mathews 60-38 and Northumberland knocked down top seeded Northampton 68-32 to advance to the finals.

Northumberland and Lancaster will have a chance of facing each other again, but they will have to win their first two games in the state tournament should that opportunity present itself.

Lancaster will play Region B Division 2 runner up Clarke County in the opening round of the Group A Division 2 Girls State Championship at Old Dominion University on March 1 at 5:30 p.m. Northumberland will travel to Robinson High School to face Region B Division 2 champion George Mason on March 2 at 1 p.m. Should Lancaster win, they will play the winner of the Central-Wise and Patrick Henry-Glade Spring game at Siegel Center on March 8. Game begins at 12:15 p.m. If Lancaster wins again, they will play in the finals on March 9 against Floyd County, Gate City, George Mason or Northumberland. Game begins at 3 p.m.

Should Northumberland win their opening game, they will play the winner of the Floyd County and Gate City game at Siegel Center on March 8. Game begins at 10:30 a.m. If Northumberland wins again, they will advance to finals on March 9 to play either Central-Wise, Patrick Henry-Glade Spring, Lancaster Clarke County. Game begins at 3 p.m.
