Man arrested, charged for First Degree Murder

Early in the morning of September 21, a 911 call developed into something more grim than most such calls. When the police arrived, they not only found an injured man, but also the body of a young woman.

Sergeant Allen Garland of the Northumberland Sheriff’s Department said the call came in just after midnight. When responders reached the residence on Gravel Pit Lane off Lodge Road in Callao they found Jason Roberts in the yard with a knife wound to his throat. When they entered the residence, they found the body of Amber Odell. She had suffered “multiple stab wounds,” Garland said.

Odell and Roberts were from North Carolina and had been living in the residence for about two months, Garland said.

Roberts was taken to the hospital where his wound was treated. While hospitalized, Roberts was interviewed by law enforcement personnel. He admitted having inflicted the knife wound on his throat on himself. “He was cooperative, but not truthful,” Garland said.

County detectives and state police examined the house for evidence, forensic and otherwise. On September 25, he was charged with the first degree murder of Odell and is now incarcerated at the regional jail.

Friday, Roberts was arraigned in Northumberland County’s Juvenile and Domestic Relations General District Court where Heathsville attorney, Rusty McKerns was appointed to represent him. As of Monday, Roberts remained incarcerated.

Roberts will have a preliminary hearing in the J&DR court  on December 11.
