The Northumberland academic team capped an outstanding year by taking the regular season team trophy for the Northern Neck District for the 2018-2019 season. The Indians finished with a 9-1 district record that Team Coach Karen Parker termed, “One of our best seasons ever.”
Each school sends a team of four students to the stage in a match. They answer questions as a questioner reads. This year the Northumberland team had done well with the questions called. Occasionally the questions don’t “fall” into a category that helps one team over another. That resulted in the Indians’ one regular season loss.
In the district and regional playoffs, the same problem caught the Indians. They took second in the district losing to Rappahannock, 165-240. In the region championship the Indians again were second with a 135-205 loss to W&L. They had beaten both teams in the regular season.
This season’s team was well represented across all grade levels. Seniors were Brandon Farmer (team captain), Izaak Hagy, Jean Jett, Nathan Parker, Dujour Taylor and Tahi Wiggins. Kelsey Moss is the lone Junior; Amaya Crabbve was the only Sophomore. Freshmen were Jay Bea, Mia Bundy, Teagan Mullins and Rachel Perez.
For their overall efforts, making the first team All-District was Senior Tahi Wiggins. Senior Nathan Parker was a second team honoree.
