Just a week back, Coaches Bonnie Swann and Nancy Burgess returned with 11 volleyball prospects from their annual sabbatical at the scenic Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg.
The Nothumberland girls attended camp at the location, where they spent some time on skills, but the majority in team competition.
This year was no different from the previous in that the Indians were the smallest school present with only one 2A school even close to their size.
Swann said that several 5A and 6A sized schools, including Stonebridge, Franklin County, Robinson and Hickory, N.C. were on the Indians’ schedule.
With only six players on the varsity level and five from the JV’s, it was no substitute time.
“There were a lot of big teams there,” Swann said. “It was great for my girls. We worked hard and learned a lot.”
Varsity candidates attending were Allison Burgess, Mary Kathryn Hall, Jillian Jett, Kellee Ramsey, Hannah Walker and Cammeron Wilkins.
From the JV ranks came Erin Burgess, Kyndal Dawson, Abby Kiss, Mary Lewis and Lexie Newsome.
Tryouts will be held early this week with scirmmages scheduled against King William and Christchurch on Aug. 19 and 20, both at home at 6 p.m.
The Indians’ first game will be Aug. 26 with West Point and will have the JV team also playing.
