For the second time in his three year career, Coach Aaron Lewis finds himself with no scrimmage with which to evaluate his young team. Friday night’s game was rescheduled for Saturday afternoon but at the last minute canceled by West Point due to a wet field. The previous cancellation wasn’t a big deal because the Indians had a largely senior team that already knew their positions. That’s not true for the 2019 version, there are some veterans around but this year’s squad will be made up of a lot of sophomore and freshmen students who have had no varsity experience.
Introducing the 2019 team: Backas quarterback is senior Mason Adams (#1). Adams returns after stellar season in which the Indians took second place in the Region 1A East playoffs. The farthest they have advanced in several years. Also getting some reps will be soph Denzell Palmer (#6). The pair are blessed to have center junior Nick Mothershead (#57) back over the ball.
Both the offensive and defensive coaches keep accentuating this year’s speed but the team’s inexperience begins to show up in the backfield. Leading the rushing attack with be freshman Antwan Mills (#10) and sophomore Kevin Edwards (#24), backing them up are juniors Anthony Ashton (#32,) Levar Churchill (#3) and senior Tyheem Redmond (#34). Because the air game, passing, will be of the utmost importance, the receiver corps is very strong. At wide receiver are seniors Dionte Kelley (#4), Derrick Smith (#2), sophomore Denzell Palmer (#6) and freshman Cameron Seldon (#12). Also set for action are senior James Slater (#8), juniors Levar Churchil (#3), Shawn Ellis (#17) and freshman Marcus Bromley (#15). At tight end are senior Joe Schindler (#21) and junior Parker Deihl (#9). Joe Schindler will handle the punting with senior Harry Lee (#27) doing both the place kicking and kick offs.
Anchoring the offensive line will be returning junior Nick Mothershead (#57). Filling in the other slots will be seniors Randy Brooks (#71), Sevin Noel (#79) Jamal Pugh (#70), DeAnte Wise (#52); juniors Ethan Brown (#64) and Tremoni Rice (#62); with frosh Kyshawn Blue (#58), Braden Gough (#54) and Joseph Jett (#66) ready to step in.
As with any small school, any of those listed on the offensive line may also do duty on the defensive side where they will join senior nose guard Trent Liner (#55) and junior Andrew Jenkins (#61). The linebacking corps has seniors Keyvon Crockett (#50), Eric Seldon (#88) and Johnathan Williams (#40); junior Parker Deihl; sophs Jaquan Morris (42) and Bradley Viers (#56) with freshman Christian Newton (#31) in reserve. Many of those listed in the wide receiver group will be ready to serve as defensive backs along with seniors Thaddus Branch (#7) and Devin White (#5). There will be lots of new faces in new places when the Indians kick off the 2019 season this Friday at the home of the Surry County Cougars at 7 p.m.
The Northumberland Indians are gearing up for a great season.
